The quadriceps are the four muscles on the front of your thigh, and together they straighten your knee. Three of them cross only the knee; the fourth crosses the hip as well, which is why leg extensions and squats train them differently.

Four muscles converge onto one tendon above the kneecap. Three are the vasti — lateralis on the outside, medialis on the inside, intermedius in the middle and underneath — and all three arise from the thigh bone itself. The fourth, rectus femoris, arises from the pelvis instead and runs straight down the middle over the top of the others.

They all end in the same place. Their shared tendon encloses the kneecap, which acts as a pulley, and continues below it to attach to the shin. The kneecap is there to hold the tendon away from the joint and improve the angle the muscles pull at — which is why a knee straightens far more forcefully than the size of these muscles alone would suggest.

Their common job is straightening the knee. Just as often they work in reverse, lengthening under load to control the knee bending: the descent of a squat, walking down a hill, absorbing a landing. That eccentric work is where most soreness after a leg session comes from.

Rectus femoris is the one that behaves differently, because it also crosses the hip and therefore also flexes it. Its length depends on hip angle, so what your hips are doing changes how much it can contribute at the knee — a distinction with real consequences for exercise selection.

The quadriceps are the largest muscle group at the front of the body and among the strongest in it. They are also visible in a specific way: the outer sweep of the thigh is vastus lateralis, and the teardrop above the inside of the knee is vastus medialis.

Training notes

Squats and their relatives train all four, and how much of the work lands here depends on where the knee travels. A more upright torso with the knees travelling forward over the toes puts more of the load on the quads; sitting back into the hips shifts it to the glutes and hamstrings. Front squats, high-bar squats and leg presses with the feet low all bias the quads.

Depth is the variable that matters most. The quads do more the deeper the knee bends, and a partial squat trains the range where they are already strongest.

Leg extensions have a specific and legitimate use: they load the knee with the hip extended, which is the one condition under which rectus femoris is long enough at the hip to contribute fully. That is not something a squat can reproduce.

The vastus medialis cannot be trained selectively, whatever exercise selection claims. All four share a tendon and a nerve and contract together; the belief that certain angles or partial ranges isolate the teardrop has not held up.

Because a great deal of what they do is eccentric, controlled lowering is worth training deliberately. Slowing the descent of a squat or a split squat loads the muscle in the way it is most often used and most often sore from.
