How to do it
- Step onto the side rails, start the belt slowly, and step on once it is moving.
- Bring the speed up to a brisk walking pace and set an incline if you want more work.
- Walk tall in the middle of the belt with your eyes forward and your arms swinging naturally.
- Land on the heel and roll through to push off from the toes.
- Keep the stride natural; the incline changes the effort, not the step length.
- Slow the belt before stepping off.
Common mistakes
- Holding the rails on an incline. Hanging on cancels most of the incline's effect, because the arms are carrying the lean; if the incline needs the rails, it is too steep.
- Leaning forward into the incline. The body stays upright and the hips stay under the shoulders; leaning turns a walk into a shuffle.
- Letting the belt drift you backwards. Drifting to the back edge means the pace is faster than the step; walk in the middle.
- Overstriding to match the speed. Turn the speed down rather than reach; a stride that reaches out is a stride that lands hard.
