How to do it

  1. Stand side-on to the direction you intend to travel, feet hip-width apart.
  2. Step your trailing leg across the front of your leading leg, then step the leading leg out to the side.
  3. Step the trailing leg across behind the leading leg, then step the leading leg out again.
  4. Continue that alternating front-and-behind pattern, letting your hips rotate as the legs cross.
  5. Keep the torso relatively square to the front while the hips turn — that separation is where the work is.
  6. Travel a set distance, then repeat leading with the other side.
