How to do it
- Set up over the bar with a wide snatch grip, feet about hip-width apart, back flat and shoulders over the bar.
- Push the floor away and drive the hips through, keeping the bar brushing the thighs.
- As the hips finish, shrug and pull the elbows high and wide.
- Split the feet, one forward and one back, while punching the arms to lock the bar overhead.
- Receive the bar overhead in the split with the torso upright and the arms locked.
- Recover the front foot back, then the back foot forward, and stand with the bar overhead.
Common mistakes
- Catching with soft elbows. The bar is locked the instant the feet land; a press-out is a missed lift.
- Splitting narrow. Feet on one line leave you wobbling under a bar overhead; the front and back foot land on separate tracks.
- Letting the bar drift forward. The pull keeps it close and the catch puts it over the hips; a bar out in front cannot be held in the split.
- Leaning the torso into the split. The chest stays up and the bar stays over the middle of the body.
