How to do it
- Load the machine and stand on its platform with your feet about hip-width apart, the handles beside your legs.
- Bend at the hips and knees and take the handles with a neutral grip, palms facing each other.
- Set your back flat, chest up and shoulders over the handles.
- Push the platform away and drive the hips forward until you are standing tall.
- Hold for a moment at the top with the shoulders back and the hips fully extended.
- Lower the handles under control along the same path, bending at the hips and knees together.
Common mistakes
- Rounding the lower back. The machine fixes the path but not your spine; the back is flat before the handles move and stays flat.
- Standing up with the knees first. Hips and shoulders rise together; if the legs straighten and the back is left to finish, the hamstrings and lower back take the whole load.
- Leaning back at the top. The finish is standing upright, not arched backwards.
- Jerking the handles from the bottom. The pull starts smoothly; a snatch off the bottom loads the back before the legs are working.
