How to do it
- Set the boots or skates firmly and stand with the feet about hip-width apart, knees bent and the weight over the balls of the feet.
- Lean slightly forward from the hips with the back flat and the arms relaxed in front.
- Push one skate out to the side and back, driving through the whole foot, while gliding forward on the other.
- Bring the pushing leg back under the body and shift the weight onto it as the other leg pushes.
- Keep the knees bent through every stride so the push is long and the glide is stable.
- Continue for the chosen time or distance.
Common mistakes
- Standing up straight. Bent knees are what make the push; straight legs give a short stride and a poor balance.
- Pushing straight back. The push is out to the side and back; a push straight back slips.
- Looking down at the feet. Eyes forward; looking down bends the back and shifts the weight forward onto the toes.
- Swinging the arms across the body. They swing forward and back, or stay quiet; a cross-body swing twists the hips.
