How to do it
- Stand close to the tire with your feet about shoulder-width apart, and squat down with the chest against the tread.
- Take the tire from underneath with both hands, forearms against the tread and the chin above the top edge.
- Drive the hips forward and the legs hard, pushing the tire up and forward rather than lifting it straight up.
- As the tire rises past the knees, step in and switch the hands from pulling underneath to pushing on the face of the tread.
- Push the tire over until it falls flat.
- Walk around to the far side and repeat.
Common mistakes
- Lifting straight up. The push is forward as much as up, driving through the tire with the chest; a straight lift at a heavy tire stalls at the knees.
- Rounding the back on the pick. The chest stays on the tread and the hips do the driving; a back that rounds to reach under is a back taking the load.
- Curling the tire with the arms. The arms are hooks; a tire that has to be curled the last part of the way is a tire the hips stopped driving.
- Switching the hands too early. The tire has to be above the knees and moving before the hands come off the underside; a switch at the bottom drops it.
