How to do it
- Clean a kettlebell to the rack position on one side and turn the feet slightly away from the bell.
- Push the hip on the bell side out to the side, and begin to bend the torso away from the bell, keeping the eyes on it.
- As the torso bends, keep the arm locked at the elbow and let the body lower away underneath the bell rather than pressing it up.
- Continue until the arm is straight and the bell is directly overhead, with the torso bent well over.
- Stand up under the locked-out bell by straightening the torso and the legs.
- Lower the bell to the rack under control and repeat, then swap sides.
Common mistakes
- Pressing the bell up. The bell barely moves; the body goes down and away from it until the arm is straight, which is why it can lift more than a press.
- Losing sight of the bell. The eyes stay on it the whole way so the arm stays vertical under it.
- Letting the arm bend as the body bends. The elbow is locked before the bend starts and stays locked; a soft elbow at the bottom is a bell coming down.
- Bending forward instead of to the side. The bend is over the hip on the bell's side; folding forward puts the bell in front of the body.
