Forearm Flexors
The forearm flexors are the group of muscles on the palm side of your forearm that close your hand and bend your wrist. They are what your grip is, and grip is what fails first in most pulling exercises.
This is the muscle mass on the underside of the forearm — the side your palm faces. Five superficial muscles are grouped here: pronator teres, flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, flexor carpi ulnaris and flexor digitorum superficialis. Almost all of them start from one shared tendon on the bump on the inner side of your elbow, then fan out down the forearm to the wrist, the palm and the fingers.
Between them they bend the wrist forward, curl the fingers into the palm, and turn the palm downward. Grouping them under one name is gym vocabulary rather than anatomy — they are separate muscles with separate jobs — but they share an origin, a compartment, mostly one nerve, and every exercise that trains any of them, so treating them as one thing is honest.
The fingers are the part that matters most for lifting. Gripping is finger flexion, and the muscles that do it have their bellies in the forearm and reach the fingers by long tendons — which is why your forearm works when you squeeze your hand and why forearm size tracks grip strength.
One of the five, palmaris longus, is commonly absent, with reported rates varying widely by population. It contributes almost nothing to grip and its absence changes nothing. If you press your thumb and little finger together and flex your wrist, the cord that stands out in the middle of your wrist is it — or is not, and that is normal.
Training notes
Most people who need more grip need holding strength rather than curling strength, and those are trained differently. Wrist curls train the wrist; dead hangs, farmer's carries and heavy holds train the fingers' ability to keep holding, which is what actually fails in the middle of a set of deadlifts or rows.
The most common mistake is reaching for straps before that limit has ever been trained. Straps have a legitimate place on the heaviest pulling sets, where grip would otherwise cap what the back can be loaded with — but using them from the first set removes the only stimulus these muscles were getting.
The flexors are considerably stronger than the extensors on the back of the forearm, and they get worked constantly by any pulling, carrying or holding. Direct work here matters far less than direct work on the extensor side, which nothing loads by accident.
Forearms tolerate frequency well. They are already working most days, they recover quickly, and short sets of holds or carries at the end of several sessions a week suit them better than one dedicated forearm workout.
Anatomy
- Origin
- A common flexor tendon on the medial epicondyle of the humerus, shared by all five muscles in this grouping
- Additional heads from the coronoid process of the ulna, the olecranon and posterior border of the ulna, and the anterior border of the radius
- Insertion
- A range rather than one point: the bases of the second and third metacarpals (flexor carpi radialis); the pisiform, hook of the hamate and fifth metacarpal (flexor carpi ulnaris); the palmar aponeurosis (palmaris longus); the middle phalanges of the four fingers (flexor digitorum superficialis)
- Pronator teres is the exception and does not reach the wrist at all — it ends mid-forearm, on the lateral surface of the radius

This slug covers the superficial layer of the anterior compartment of the forearm: pronator teres, flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, flexor carpi ulnaris and flexor digitorum superficialis. It is a grouping of convenience — a single hover target and a single page for muscles that no gym movement separates — and it is not a name any anatomical reference uses.
Because it is a grouping, its origin and insertion are stated as ranges. The origin is genuinely shared: all five arise at least in part from the common flexor tendon on the medial epicondyle of the humerus, with several taking additional heads from the ulna or radius. The insertions are not shared at all, and span everything from the mid-radius to the middle phalanges of the fingers.
The deep flexors — flexor digitorum profundus, flexor pollicis longus and pronator quadratus — are not included, and neither are the intrinsic muscles of the hand. Flexor digitorum profundus in particular does a large share of the work in gripping, so the group as modelled is the visible superficial layer rather than the whole flexor mechanism.
Innervation is nearly uniform and worth stating exactly because of the exception: the median nerve supplies all of them except flexor carpi ulnaris, which is ulnar. That split is one of the standard landmarks of forearm anatomy.
Under load
The group is loaded by wrist flexion, finger flexion and forearm pronation, and by any sustained hold — which recruits the finger flexors isometrically for the duration rather than through a range.
Grip failure during pulling movements is generally a failure of sustained finger flexion rather than of wrist strength, so holds and carries load the failing element more directly than wrist curls do.
The compartment is under near-continuous low-level load in ordinary use and in most training, which is why it tolerates frequent work and why the extensor compartment is the side more likely to be neglected.
