How to do it
- Set a single handle on a low pulley and take it in the hand furthest from the machine.
- Stand side-on so the cable crosses in front of your body.
- Stand tall with a small fixed bend at the elbow.
- Raise the arm out to the side until the hand is level with the shoulder.
- Stop level rather than continuing upward.
- Lower under control against the cable, then finish the side before swapping.
Common mistakes
- Shrugging as the arm rises. The cable pulls smoothly, which makes a shrug easier to miss than with a dumbbell.
- Standing square to the machine. Side-on with the cable crossing the body is what keeps the resistance in line with the arm's path.
- Leaning away from the machine. The trunk stays upright; leaning adds height the shoulder did not produce.
- Letting the cable snap the arm down. The lowering half is where a cable still pulls at the bottom, which is exactly where a dumbbell has gone slack.
