Rotator Cuff
The rotator cuff is a set of four small muscles wrapped around the shoulder blade and the top of the arm bone. Their job is to hold the ball of the shoulder in its socket while the big muscles move it.
The shoulder trades stability for range of motion. The socket is shallow — a golf ball on a tee is the usual comparison — which is what lets your arm move in almost any direction, and also what means nothing about the joint's shape holds it together. The rotator cuff is what does. Four muscles run from the shoulder blade to the top of the arm bone and their tendons blend into a single sleeve over the joint, pulling the ball into the socket from four sides at once.
The four are supraspinatus above, infraspinatus and teres minor behind, and subscapularis in front. Three of them rotate the arm outward or start it moving away from the body; the fourth, subscapularis, rotates it inward. They oppose each other on purpose, because opposing pulls are how the joint stays centred.
Very little of what they do is visible or dramatic. During a bench press or an overhead press, the cuff is not producing the movement — it is keeping the joint aligned while the deltoid and the pecs produce it. That is a genuine, continuous job that goes unnoticed precisely because it is being done well.
The rotator cuff is grouped by function rather than anatomy: four separate muscles with four separate attachments and three different nerves, collected under one name because their tendons blend and their job is shared. There is no single origin or nerve for the cuff as a whole.
Training notes
The cuff is trained by rotation, and rotation is not part of most programs. Internal and external rotation with a band or a light cable, done with the elbow tucked at the side and the forearm sweeping in or out, is the whole category. Weights stay light for a good reason — these are small muscles with short lever arms and no interest in heavy loads.
Scaption — raising the arm to shoulder height in the plane about thirty degrees forward of straight sideways, thumb leading — is the one common movement that loads the supraspinatus directly rather than as a bystander to a press.
Almost everything else claimed as cuff work is not. Overhead pressing, lateral raises and face pulls all involve the cuff as a stabiliser, but stabilising a movement is not the same as being trained through a range of motion. If nothing in a program rotates the upper arm, the cuff has not been trained.

- Supraspinatus
The supraspinatus sits in the shallow groove above the ridge on the back of your shoulder blade and passes over the top of the shoulder joint. It starts the movement of lifting your arm out to the side.
- Infraspinatus
The infraspinatus covers most of the back of your shoulder blade and rotates your upper arm outward. It produces most of the shoulder's external rotation strength.
- Teres Minor
The teres minor is a narrow strap along the outer edge of the shoulder blade that rotates the arm outward. It does the same job as the infraspinatus above it and is the smallest of the rotator cuff.
- Subscapularis
The subscapularis is the only rotator cuff muscle on the front of the shoulder blade — it fills the whole surface facing your ribs — and it is the one that rotates your arm inward.
