The tibialis anterior is the muscle running down the front of your shin. It lifts your foot upward, which is the opposite of what your calves do, and almost nothing in a gym trains it.

The tibialis anterior runs down the front and outer side of the shin bone. It is the muscle you can feel and see standing out beside the shin when you pull your toes up toward you, and it is the largest muscle in the front compartment of the lower leg. Its tendon crosses the front of the ankle and attaches underneath the inner side of the foot.

Its main job is lifting the foot — dorsiflexion, the opposite of what the calves do. Its more important job happens on every step. When your heel strikes the ground while walking, your foot would slap down if nothing controlled it; the tibialis anterior lengthens under tension to lower it smoothly. It also lifts the toes clear of the ground as the leg swings forward.

It also turns the sole of the foot inward and helps support the arch, so it contributes to how the foot behaves under load as well as to where it points.

It is the antagonist of the calf muscles, and the imbalance between them is extreme in most people. Everything about walking, running, standing and calf training loads the back of the lower leg; essentially nothing loads the front. Its page here is short on exercises for the same reason the exercise database has no term for it: almost no gym movement asks anything of it.

In gym vocabulary this is simply the shin muscle, and the ache people report on the front of the lower leg during a lot of running is commonly attributed to this region. What that means in any specific case is a question for a professional.

Training notes

Direct work is simple and rarely done: pull the toes upward against a resistance band, or hook the toes under a weight and lift. Toe raises with the heels on the floor and the back against a wall work with no equipment at all.

It gets loaded incidentally by walking on inclines, by hiking downhill where it controls each footfall, and by sprinting. None of that appears in a normal gym session.

It responds to high repetitions and short ranges because its range at the ankle is small. The relevant quality is endurance, matching what it does in gait.

It is a reasonable thing to add for anyone who runs a lot, and it takes about two minutes. It is the clearest example on this site of a muscle that is easy to train and almost never trained.

Innervation

Tibialis anterior arises from the lateral condyle and proximal lateral surface of the tibia and the adjacent interosseous membrane, descends alongside the anterior border of the tibia, and passes deep to the extensor retinacula to insert on the medial cuneiform and the base of the first metatarsal.

It is the strongest dorsiflexor of the ankle and the principal invertor of the foot. Its tendon is the most medial of those crossing the front of the ankle and is readily palpable there.

Its most frequent functional role is eccentric: during the loading response of gait it controls plantarflexion after heel strike, and during swing it maintains dorsiflexion to clear the toes. Loss of its function produces foot drop, which is the characteristic presentation of deep fibular nerve injury.

Its insertion on the medial side of the foot means it also contributes to the medial longitudinal arch, acting with tibialis posterior on the opposite side of the same bones.

Under load

It is loaded by resisted dorsiflexion and by inversion, neither of which occurs in conventional resistance training.

Incidental loading comes from downhill walking, inclined surfaces and running, all of which demand repeated eccentric control of plantarflexion.

Its available range at the ankle is small, so training it is a matter of repetition and endurance rather than of load.
