Pec MinorPectoralis Minor
The pectoralis minor is a small triangular muscle hidden underneath the pecs, running from the upper ribs to a hook of bone on the shoulder blade. It moves the shoulder blade, not the arm.
The pec minor sits beneath the pectoralis major, and you will never see it. It runs from three of the upper ribs up and outward to the coracoid process — a short beak of bone that juts forward from the top of the shoulder blade and is the one part of the scapula you can feel from the front.
That attachment is what makes it different from every other chest muscle. It does not cross the shoulder joint and it does not touch the arm bone, so it cannot move your arm at all. What it does is pull the shoulder blade forward around the ribcage and tip its lower point backward off the ribs. When it shortens, the whole shoulder rolls slightly forward and down.
This makes it the muscle most often blamed for rounded shoulders, and it is worth being careful about that claim. Posture is a product of many things at once, and a short pec minor is one plausible contributor rather than a diagnosis. What is not in dispute is the mechanics: this muscle pulls the shoulder blade forward, and the muscles on the back of the shoulder blade pull it back.
Training notes
Nobody trains the pec minor on purpose, and there is no reason to. It works during any pressing or pushing movement where the shoulder blade travels forward — the top of a push-up, the lockout of a bench press, anything that ends with the arms reaching. It gets plenty.
The useful thing to know is what balances it. The muscles that pull the shoulder blade back and rotate it upward — the lower and middle trapezius, the rhomboids, the serratus anterior — are the ones that spend the day being outworked by the front of the body. Rowing, face pulls and overhead work are where that balance comes from.
Because it lies underneath the pectoralis major, no chest exercise can be aimed at it and no stretch reaches it in isolation. Treat it as context for why upper-back work matters rather than as a target with its own slot in a program.

Pectoralis minor lies deep to pectoralis major, on the front of the ribcage. Three fleshy slips arise from the upper ribs near where bone meets cartilage, converge upward and outward, and end on the coracoid process — the forward-pointing hook at the top of the shoulder blade. Its rib attachments are variable: most commonly ribs three to five, sometimes two to four or two to five.
Because it spans from ribcage to shoulder blade and never reaches the humerus, it acts only on the scapula. It pulls the coracoid forward and down, which protracts and depresses the shoulder blade and tips its lower angle backward off the ribcage. With the scapula held still by the muscles of the back, the pull reverses and it becomes an accessory muscle of breathing, lifting the ribs.
It is a landmark as much as a muscle. The axillary artery, vein and the brachial plexus all pass behind it on the way to the arm, and surgical and clinical descriptions of that region are routinely organised around whether a structure lies above, behind or below pectoralis minor.
Under load
It contracts during any movement that carries the shoulder blade forward: the top of a push-up, the lockout of a bench press, a reach. No gym movement isolates it, because pectoralis major lies over it and shares those movements.
Its functional counterweight is the group of muscles that pull the shoulder blade back, down and into upward rotation — lower and middle trapezius, the rhomboids, serratus anterior. Those are the muscles a program can actually address.
Claims that shortening of this muscle explains rounded shoulders are common and overstated. The mechanics are not in doubt; the causal story about posture is a much weaker claim than it is usually presented as.
