How to do it

  1. Set the thigh pad on the machine so your legs are held firmly and your feet reach the floor.
  2. Stand up, take a wide overhand grip on the bar — roughly one and a half times shoulder-width — then sit down with your arms straight overhead.
  3. Lean your torso back about ten to fifteen degrees and hold that angle. Sitting perfectly upright makes the bar hit your face; leaning back forty-five degrees turns the movement into a row.
  4. Draw your shoulder blades down before you pull, letting your shoulders drop away from your ears.
  5. Pull the bar down toward your collarbones by driving your elbows down along your ribs, not by pulling with your hands.
  6. Touch or come close to the upper chest, pause briefly, then let the bar rise under control until your arms are straight and your shoulders rise again at the top.
