How to do it
- Attach a strap or rope to a sled and face away from it, taking the handles in both hands overhead.
- Set the upper arms beside the ears with the elbows bent and the hands behind the head, so the strap runs back over the shoulders to the sled.
- Lean forward slightly and brace the stomach.
- Straighten the arms overhead to drag the sled a short distance forward.
- Step forward to take up the slack, let the elbows bend back behind the head, and repeat.
- Keep the upper arms pointing up for the whole distance.
Common mistakes
- Walking the sled with the body. The step forward only takes up slack; the sled moves because the arms extend, not because you lean and walk.
- Letting the elbows drop forward. The upper arms stay beside the ears; elbows that come forward turn it into a shoulder press against the strap.
- Overloading the sled. If the arms cannot lock out without a lean, the sled is too heavy for the movement.
- Letting the strap go slack. Each repetition starts with the strap taut and the elbows bent; slack means the first inch of the extension is doing nothing.
