How to do it
- Clean one kettlebell to the rack position and stand tall.
- Set your feet hip-width apart and brace your stomach.
- Press the bell up and out to the side rather than straight overhead, so the arm finishes at an angle away from your head.
- Keep the torso upright — the bell travels out, you do not lean in.
- Finish with the arm straight and the bell out to the side.
- Lower under control to the rack, then finish the side before swapping.
Common mistakes
- Leaning toward the bell to meet it. The torso stays vertical and the arm does the travelling; leaning turns it into an ordinary press with a tilted body.
- Pressing so far out that the shoulder is unsupported. The angle is a deliberate few degrees off vertical, not a lateral raise with a bent elbow at the end.
- Using your straight press weight. Out of the vertical line the shoulder has much less to offer.
- Letting the wrist bend. The further from vertical the bell finishes, the more it wants to pull the wrist back.
