How to do it
- Stand holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides, feet about hip-width apart.
- Keep a slight bend in the elbows and the shoulders down and back.
- Raise the dumbbells out to the sides a short distance, roughly to hip height or a little higher, leading with the elbows.
- Lower them back to the sides under control.
- Repeat through this short range without letting the dumbbells rest against the legs at the bottom.
- Keep the torso still and the movement small.
Common mistakes
- Extending the range. The point is the short bottom section of a lateral raise; raising to shoulder height turns it into an ordinary lateral raise and defeats the choice.
- Swinging from the hips. A short range with a heavier dumbbell invites a heave; the torso stays still and the shoulder does the work.
- Letting the dumbbells touch the thighs. Resting at the bottom takes the tension off; the arms stop just short of the legs each time.
- Shrugging into each repetition. The shoulders stay down; a shrug moves the effort into the upper trapezius.
