How to do it
- Lie on your back on the floor holding one kettlebell in the rack position on one side.
- Bend the knee on the same side and cross that leg over the other, so the hip on the working side is lifted and turned slightly.
- Set the free arm on the floor and pull the working shoulder down and back.
- Lower the bell by bending the elbow until the back of the upper arm touches the floor.
- Press back up until the arm is locked over the chest.
- Keep the crossed leg in place for the whole set, then swap sides.
Common mistakes
- Letting the crossed leg roll the whole body over. The leg is crossed so the trunk has to resist the twist; if you roll onto your side, the resistance has been given up.
- Pressing the bell over the face. The bell finishes over the shoulder, not the head; an arm angled back towards the ears is unstable at the top.
- Flaring the elbow. It travels out at about forty-five degrees to the body and touches down close to the ribs.
- Bouncing the elbow off the floor. Touch and press; a bounce takes the work out of the bottom of the movement.
