How to do it

  1. Set a barbell in a rack at upper-chest height and step under it, resting it across your upper back as for a squat.
  2. Unrack the bar and take one or two steps back. Start much lighter than you expect — this movement loads a long lever.
  3. Set your feet hip- to shoulder-width apart with a soft bend in the knees.
  4. Brace your stomach and set your back flat.
  5. Push your hips back and let your torso hinge forward, keeping the back flat and the knees only slightly bent.
  6. Lower until you feel a strong stretch through the hamstrings, usually somewhere near parallel to the floor.
  7. Drive your hips forward to return to standing, squeezing the glutes at the top.
