How to do it
- Lie on your back with your hands beside your ears and your knees bent.
- Press your lower back gently into the floor.
- Curl your shoulders up and bring one elbow toward the opposite knee as that knee draws in.
- Meet them over the middle of your body, rotating the trunk as you go.
- Lower both under control back to the start.
- Repeat to the other side, alternating.
Common mistakes
- Pulling on the head with the hands. Fingertips rest beside the ears and the neck stays in line with the spine; the elbow gets closer because the trunk rotated.
- Moving only the knee. The elbow and the knee travel toward each other; a knee tuck with a still torso is a different, easier movement.
- Rotating from the shoulders alone. The rotation comes through the ribs and waist — flapping the elbow across does not load the obliques.
- Letting the lower back arch as the leg extends. That is the point where the abdominal wall stopped holding.
