How to do it
- Stand with a dumbbell in each hand at your sides, palms facing your thighs.
- Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart and your stomach braced.
- Set a small bend at the elbows and hold it.
- Raise both arms out to the sides until the hands are level with the shoulders.
- Stop level rather than continuing upward.
- Lower under control to your sides.
Common mistakes
- Shrugging as the arms rise. Once the shoulders lift toward the ears the upper trapezius has taken over.
- Going above shoulder height. Past level the shoulder blade has to rotate for the arm to keep travelling, and it has stopped being a lateral raise.
- Leaning back to help. The lower back arching is the trunk lifting the weight.
- Swinging from the bottom. A dead stop at the thighs is what keeps a light dumbbell hard.
