How to do it
- Take a push-up position with your hands under your shoulders and your body in one line.
- Perform one push-up.
- Keeping one hand planted, walk the other hand and both feet a small step around it, as if walking around a clock face.
- Perform another push-up in the new position.
- Continue stepping around the fixed hand, one push-up per position.
- Complete the circle, then swap which hand stays planted.
Common mistakes
- Letting the hips drop while walking between positions. The trunk holds its line through the steps as well as the push-ups, and the steps are where it is easiest to lose.
- Taking large steps. Small steps keep the shoulders roughly under the hands; a big step puts one arm at an angle it has to press out of.
- Doing the whole circle on one hand. Each hand takes a turn as the pivot, or one shoulder does all the awkward angles.
- Choosing it as a chest exercise. The push-ups are ordinary; what this adds is holding position through a changing hand placement, which is trunk and shoulder work.
