How to do it
- Kneel on a mat with your forearms flat on the floor, elbows under your shoulders.
- Set your body in one line from knees to head and brace your stomach.
- Walk your elbows forward slightly so they sit ahead of your shoulders.
- Press your palms into the floor and straighten the elbows to lift your torso.
- Finish with the arms straight and the body still in one line.
- Lower under control back to the forearms.
Common mistakes
- Pushing the hips up to get the arms straight. The hips staying put is what keeps the load on the triceps; hips rising turns it into a kneeling plank-to-push-up.
- Letting the elbows slide back under the shoulders. Elbows slightly ahead is what makes the triceps work through a range rather than just holding.
- Doing it from the feet before the kneeling version is easy. From the toes this is a large amount of bodyweight through an elbow extension.
- Expecting a long range. The torso rises a short distance, and adding height means the hips have joined in.
